Menon-Binary Gloves

Earlier this week, I finished this pair if fingerless mitts designed by Harper (@disyarning) from the MoonCraft Collective.

The design feature quotes translated into binary code from Alok Vaid Menon, a gender non-conforming writer and performance artist, that Harper selected from some of their Instagram. If you’re not following Alok yet, I highly recommend you do, their work is fantastic.

One glove says “being non-binary isn’t new” and the other “you can’t divide billions into two“. As a gender-queer person myself, those words resonate a lot for me and I love that I can wear them in a way that can be a conversation starter.

I used some leftover yarn from CrookedKitchen Yarn (Bluebel base – A Yarn Has No Name) and Malabrigo Yarn (Sock – Light of Love).

I worked with 2.5mm 9″ circular needles, which is a smaller than what is required for the pattern but I like my mittens to be snug and I don’t have very big hands for someone my size.

Pattern is available for free on Ravelry.
